Baseball Rules Explained in Simple Terms

Baseball might seem complicated at first, but once you understand the basics, it’s actually pretty simple and fun! Here’s a beginner-friendly guide to how the game works.

The Goal of the Game

The goal is to score more runs than the other team.

A run is scored when a player hits the ball and successfully touches all four bases:

First base

Second base

Third base

Home plate

The Teams

Each team has 9 players on the field

One team bats (offense)

The other team fields (defense)

Teams switch roles after 3 outs

Innings

A baseball game is divided into 9 innings.

Each inning has two halves:

Top – Visiting team bats

Bottom – Home team bats

How Batting Works

The pitcher throws the ball, and the batter tries to hit it.

There are 3 possible outcomes:

Hit the ball and run to bases

Miss (strike)

Don’t swing and it’s outside the strike zone (ball)

Balls and Strikes

3 strikes = you’re out

4 balls = you walk to first base (free pass)

What Is an Out?

The defensive team tries to get 3 outs to switch sides.

Ways to get an out:

Batter gets 3 strikes

Ball is caught in the air

Runner is tagged with the ball

Ball reaches the base before the runner

Base Running

After hitting the ball:

The batter becomes a runner

They try to advance from base to base

They can stop at any base or keep running

Home Runs

If the batter hits the ball out of the field (over the fence):

It’s a home run

The batter automatically scores

All runners on base score too

Simple Game Flow

Pitcher throws the ball

Batter hits (or misses)

Fielders try to get the batter or runners out

If safe, runners advance and try to score

Winning the Game

After 9 innings:

The team with the most runs wins

If tied, extra innings are played

Final Thought

Baseball is all about timing, teamwork, and strategy. Once you understand the basics, watching (or playing) becomes much more exciting! Now you’re ready to enjoy the game like a pro ⚾
