Badminton Shot Placement for Beginners: Where to Aim

Badminton Shot Placement for Beginners: Where to Aim

When you're new to badminton, placement wins more points than power. Learning where to aim helps you control rallies, force movement, and reduce your own mistakes.

Here’s a beginner-friendly breakdown of smart targets on the court.

1. Deep to the Back Line

High, deep clears toward the back boundary:

Push your opponent away from the net

Give you time to recover

Make smashes harder for them

Depth creates pressure without requiring extra power.

2. Front Corners Near the Net

Soft drop shots aimed just over the net into the front corners:

Force your opponent to move forward quickly

Disrupt their rhythm

Create openings for your next shot

Keep these controlled rather than fancy tight and low is enough.

3. Side-to-Side Movement

Instead of hitting straight back, aim cross-court occasionally to:

Stretch the court

Make your opponent change direction

Increase the chance of weak returns

Movement creates mistakes.

4. The Open Space

After your opponent hits from one corner, the opposite side is often open.

Train yourself to:

Quickly scan the court

Hit where they aren’t

Avoid hitting directly back to them

Badminton is about exploiting space.

5. The Backhand Side

Many beginners are less confident on their backhand.

If you notice hesitation or weaker returns:

Direct more shots to that side

Keep them moving there consistently

You don’t need perfect accuracy just intentional targeting.

6. Aim Inside the Lines

Beginners often aim too close to boundaries.

Instead:

Aim a safe margin inside the lines

Focus on consistency over precision

Let your opponent make the risky errors

Controlled placement beats low-percentage line shots.

7. High-Percentage First, Winners Later

Your first goal is keeping the shuttle in play.

Once you:

Reduce unforced errors

Control depth

Move your opponent

Points will come naturally.

Final Thoughts

In beginner badminton, aiming deep, wide, and into open space will win you far more rallies than trying to hit every shot as a winner.
